"Creating Wonderful Portraits"

Tips for the perfect photo session!

Maternity Sessions

  • Maternity portraits can be as modest or revealing as you wish.

Newborn Portrait Sessions

Children's Portrait Sessions

  • When photographing young babies, either totally naked or with just a diaper on, try not to dress them in restrictive clothing...elastic around waistbands, sleeves and socks tend to leave impressions and red marks.  If a red mark occurs, DO NOT try to rub it out.  It will only make the area more red.
  • If your baby will be wearing clothes in the portrait, stick to solid light or pastel colors.  Wild prints, plaids, stripes and poka dots tend to distract from the baby's face.
  • Diaper designs will normally show through most light colored clothing.  One solution is to get diapers that have the design only on the front waistband and put them on backwards, not inside out.
  • If your baby needs a pacifier, try to limit it's use before the portrait session.  This will reduce the risk of a red ring around their mouth.
  • I prefer to photograph babies without shoes, baarefooted poses are very natural.  If you decide you would like your child to wear shoes, please look at the design on the bottom.  If at all possible, try to avoid shoes with designs on the soles.  This is a distraction in quality portraiture.
  • 3 month milestones--Usually at this age your baby will be able to lay on their belly and hold up their head.  Also, smiles usually develop.  So, prior to a session, don't use up all those smiles by practicing.
  • 6 month milestones--By this age, your baby will be really good at holding up their head and possibly sitting up as well.  I will always ask Mom or Dad to have one hand on the baby for safety purposes during a portrait session.
  • 12 month milestones--Around this age, your baby will have a wonderful little personality, be able to move around furniture by holding on and love to feed themselves.  This is a great opportunity to photograph their first steps!
  • Remember...an ill child will photograph just the way they feel.  Please reschedule your portrait session if your child is not feeling well.
  • Don't try a new haircut the day before a portrait session.  It is best to wait about 1 week.
  • Purple mouth, red lips or green tongues are colorful, but difficult to fix in a portrait.  Please do not allow your child to have lollipops or colored juice before a session.
  • Try clothing and outfits on and check for fit early enough to make changes if you need to.  Be sure to see how the clothes fit both standing and seated.
  • I usually suggest only one vistor (usually mom) in the studio during the portrait session.  More visitors usually means more distractions.  However, if you are having more than one child photographed, a second adult on the scene may be helpful.
  • If by chance your child refuses to put something on or do something you want done during the session, just let me know and I will be more than happy to help out.  Just relax and everything will come together.
